1.3 — The Retreat

Sample Video 1
6 min Beginner

This lesson covers how to retreat cleanly under pressure without losing balance or overextending. Focus on keeping your back foot leading and your weight centered through the whole movement.

Lesson Objectives

  • Understand proper back-foot-first retreat sequencing
  • Keep hips and shoulders square through the movement
  • Chain 3+ retreats without breaking rhythm

What You'll Need

  • Open floor space, at least 4 metres
  • Fencing shoes or flat athletic shoes
  • Optional: phone camera to film yourself
Coach's Notes

Common mistake: dropping the back heel too early, which telegraphs the retreat. Keep your weight loaded on the balls of both feet and push off the front foot, not the back.
